How to Smoke Clear Your Space (Respectfully)

A note on words, first. Traditional smudging is a sacred ceremony belonging to specific Indigenous cultures. Out of respect, we call our own practice smoke clearing. We also buy our sage from the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, so the communities these traditions come from are honored and supported. (More on our sourcing →)

Burning aromatic herbs to reset a space is one of the oldest rituals humans have. Here’s how to do it, even in a tiny apartment:

  1. Set your intention. Name what you want to invite in before you begin.
  2. Crack a window. Let the smoke carry heavy energy out. Small space? Use less.
  3. Light it up. Light the tip, then gently fan out the flame. You want a slow smolder, not a bonfire. (Don’t blow on it.)
  4. Move with purpose. Walk your space; let smoke drift into corners and doorways.
  5. Close it out. Rest the bundle in a fireproof dish and let it fully extinguish.

Fire safety: Use a fireproof dish, never leave it unattended, and keep it away from kids and pets. Prefer an alternative to white sage? Try Yerba Santa, Palo Santo, cedar, rosemary, or lavender.
